Tourists flee for their lives as gunmen open fire on popular Mexican beach resort, killing three under a palm tree
Frightened tourists were forced to run for their lives after gunmen arrived at a Mexican beach resort and starting shooting .
Three men were killed with the suspects opened fire at Playa Palmilla, a popular beach near San Jose del Cabo, in north-west Mexico, at around 2pm on Sunday.
It has been reported that the victims were hit while resting under a palm tree, according to Nuevolaredo.tv .
Their identities have not yet been confirmed by police.
Two more – a man and a woman -are thought to have been wounded in the horrific attack .
They were taken to hospital for treatment.
A tourist told the International Business Times: “We heard the shots and just ran to get somewhere safe.
“It was automatic weapons fire.”
A video has been released which appears to show the shooting from the point of view of one gunman, who seems to be firing an automatic weapon towards holidaymakers.
It is thought that the beach was extremely crowded at the time of the shooting, with both Mexican and foreign tourists enjoying the weekend sunshine.
Police evacuated the area after arriving at the scene.
No arrests have been made at this stage.
The horrifying incident, which took place yesterday, has caused panic among tourists .
This year, 230 people have already been murdered in the area.
Officials believe the latest violence could have been part of the fall out after top drug cartel leaders were recently arrested.
The country boasts a range of violent statistics, with 186,000 people murdered in Mexico since 2006, and 30,000 missing, according to information obtained by Mexican newspaper Reforma.
