'Road rage' driver filmed 'pointing fake gun at terrified motorists so she could get through traffic on busy highway'
A female driver was allegedly filmed pointing what appeared to be a gun at a terrified father and son in the car next to her as they sped along a highway.
Ben McNeil and his son, Jacob, captured video footage of the driver of a red pick-up truck while they were travelling in Texas, US, during the early morning incident.
In the clip, the woman appears to brandish a weapon at the pair’s car on Highway 225, near Houston. It is alleged that she used the method in a bid to get through traffic.
The dad and son described the incident as “terrifying”.
“We were having a pretty chilled morning. There was no provocation. She pointed a gun at us from four feet and then tried to run us into the side route, Mr McNeil told KHOU.com.
“It happened so fast. All you can do is manoeuvre your vehicle out of the way.”
When they showed the video to police, detectives were able to identify the woman as 25-year-old Amanda Downs, according to local media.
They linked her to an ‘almost identical ‘incident on the same road last month.
“She admitted using the gun to get through traffic,” Mr McNeil claimed.
“It’s just flabergasting.”
Downes allegedly later confessed to both incidents, KHOU reported. The ‘gun’ allegedly turned out to be a knife modified to look like a firearm.
Sergeant Bennie Boles from the La Ponte Police Department said while the weapon was fake, if someone with a real weapon had returned fire “and now we have a shootout on the side of the freeway”.
La Porte Police Department, in Texas, said it was contacted around 7am – the second report of a road-rage involving the same woman in recent weeks.
“The LPPD Criminal Investigations Division recognized the case was nearly identical to a previously reported case and immediately went to work,” it said in a statement.
“Detectives canvassing the area were able to locate the suspect and her vehicle two days later parked in a nearby industrial park.
“The suspect was identified as 25 year old Amanda Downs, of Baytown Texas.
“Downs confessed to both reported incidents, surrendering what turned out to be a large folding knife cast in the shape of a handgun.
“As a result of the investigation the Harris County District Attorney’s Office accepted the charge of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.”
