Laughing gunman shoots hammerhead shark while fishing from boat turning sea blood red in shocking footage
A shocking video has emerged showing a man shooting a shark with a handgun at point blank range as the animal floats next to a boat while hooked to a fishing rod.
The water around the hammerhead shark is seen turning dark red as the smiling gunman pumps several rounds into the helpless animal.
Other men on the boat can be heard laughing as the shark bleeds out into the ocean in the video which has caused widespread outrage after it went viral online.
Russ Rector, an animal rights activist who said he was given the clip by the person who recorded it, was told that it happened in the waters near Sarasota in Florida, the US’ southernmost state.
“He was enjoying it,” Rector told ABC’s Local10 news channel of the gunman.
The video is the latest to show a shark being abused in the water off the coast of Florida.
Last week, footage emerged showing another shark being dragged behind a speedboat as crew are seen laughing. It is unclear whether the animal is dead or alive.
Both videos are being investigated by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).
“The use of powerheads, explosives, chemicals or the discharge of firearms to kill or harvest marine life is prohibited in state waters,” an FWC spokesman said.
