Before Chris Cornell died in May at age 52, the singer recorded a contribution to an upcoming album based on Johnny Cash’s poetry.

Last year, John Carter Cash published a book of his father’s poems, Forever Words: The Unknown Poems. Since then, he’s set about pairing some of the poems with modern songwriters who can set them to music. Brad Paisley was the first to try it with the track “Gold All Over the Ground” for his new album Love and War. In an interview with the blog Kentucky Country Music last week, Paisley’s fellow country star Jamey Johnson revealed that he and Cornell were also on the album.

“He’s working on an album where’s he’s pairing up these songs with songwriters from our day to finish up these Johnny Cash songs.  One of them that I know he’s most proud of and you can’t get it anymore – he’s got Chris Cornell having finished one of these songs and then recorded it,” Johnson said.  “I’m excited for it to come out. I got to do a couple of them.”

The album is titled Johnny Cash Forever Words: The Music, but no release date has been set yet.
